I cannot believe myself that I now enjoy encountering birds and taking pictures of them! In my life, I could not even see any drawings or photos of birds!! Yet, if you encounter a bird having such a beautiful tail, you would understand why I am almost becoming a birder! The bird in the photos is Highland motmot, Momotus aequatorialis. It is found only in the forest or woodland at 1000m – 2400m altitude. In the Manu cloud forest, I was lucky enough to see a motmot just staying on a branch for a while. Though.....it was not close enough and there was not enough light to take good photos! Now I want to take better photos of the bird!!! Well...I guess that I am on the right track to be a real birder, now!! #

There is a medicinal plant called Bat's claw in Amazon. Cat’s claw is one of the most famous Amazon medicinal plants. But, Bat’s claw growing in the primary and secondary forest in Peruvian Amazon, seems to be used widely around this area. Bat’s claw (Macfadyena uncata) is a plant in Bignoniaceae. The shaman in Santa Rosa de Huacaria taught me that it has anti-inflammatory effect and is used for inflammation of prostate gland and the kidneys. It is also used for wound and bruise!! Why is this called Bat's Claw? Does it look like a bat's claw?? I forgot to ask the Shaman where the name came from…. #

I encountered a Peruvian Spider Monkey (Ateles chamek) in the rain forest. The spider monkey was really black and is also called Black Spider Monkey. Putting its long tail and long arms between branches freely, the monkey was eating and playing at the higher up in the canopy by itself. While I was taking pictures of it, the monkey noticed me and started making postures for me! Peruvian Spider Monkeys live in a part of Peruvian rain forest, western Amazon in Brazil and the north of Bolivia. It is registered as “Endangered” in the Red list. When I started leaving the monkey, it suddenly grabbed and waved a big liana hanging towards me. “trying to get my attention?” I again put my camera trained on the monkey. Then, it just stared at me for a while. Was it part of posturing?? The spider monkey was amazingly slily and friendly!! I really hope they can stay and live in the rain forest forever. #

“If you break the diet three times, you would loose your life.” “How can I recover from breaking it?” Luis, my guide, interrupted translation and seriously asked the question for himself. We are learning medicinal plants at Centro Nape, the shaman’s herbal garden in front of huge trees. Oje, Ficus insipida, is one of fig species, but not a strangler one. It grows up to 30 – 40 m and has a huge buttress root. Oje has widely used throughout Amazonia as a medicinal plant. The sap of Oje is used for removing parasites from intestines. 200ml alcohol and 8 tea spoons of sugar are added to 1litter Oje sap. After 8 days, adults take 4 spoons of the liquid at every 5 O’clock in the morning for 3 days; children take 1 to 2 spoons. After that, you must keep the diet of no lemons, tomatoes, papayas, meats, acid or alcohol with refraining from sex for 8 days. If you break it, you must start over the diet for 15 days this time. If it is broken three times, you would loose your life!! Luis once has been prescribed this and broke the diet! The sap is obtained from “Female” Oje tree. Ojes often stand as a pair and one is usually bigger than the other. The leaves of male tree are also much bigger. They say that “Male” Oje is too strong to use as a medicine! Some Ficus species are dioecious, so Oje might be the case as well. Fig fruits are very important food resources in the neo tropics. I found very tiny fruits of Oje on the ground. I was wondering if I was able to see the ripe fruit sometime later. They must be higher up on the canopy or quickly eaten by birds!! #

Leaves are moving in a long line on the ground! Once you visit Amazon, you will definitely meet leaf-cutter ants carrying a piece of leave for a long distance. They are so easy to be found, not only because they are so many and carrying leaves, but because their paths are distinctive, as if wiped out by a broom! Leaf-cutter ants are classified into Atta or Acromyrmex whose characteristic is to culture fungus in their colony. Ants never eat the leaves. Clipped leaves are chewed into a soft pulp. Before leaves are placed on fungus beds, ants defecate fecal droplet on them! Leaf cutters do select the type of leaves they use. For example, the ants do not carry leaves which contain toxin to the fungus they culture! To obtain the right leaves, they travel for a long way! At the entrance of their colony, each leave ants carry is checked. If it passes, the ant carries it into the colony. If not, the ants drop the leaf before the entrance, and they seem to go back to the way they came!! The fungus cultured by leaf-cutter ants are also protected from other fungal species by them. Leaf-cutter ants and the fungus are totally dependent on each other! They have lived like this since approximately 50 million years ago! They have such a long relationship! #
