Santa Maria, Lepianthes peltata, is a medicinal plant used in Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon. It is said to be originated from Central America, but distributed in the US, Central Africa, Papua New Guinia, Taiwan, etc. It is also called Monkey’s Hand. Its big heart shape is easily identified. The leaves are used as tablecloth or food wrapping. As a medicinal plant, its decoction is used for promote urine flow, relieve fever and induce vomiting in Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon. It is also used in cases of inflammation, intestinal worms, burns, colds, swellings, headaches and toothaches. I could not find Santa Maria in the rain forest. The photos were taken at Atalaya port. But, it is supposed to be found in the secondary forest. Next time, I would like to encounter Santa Maria in the rain forest! #

You will not miss to see the towers on the ground in the rainforest. There are so many of them! These are the exit of Cicadas which stay underground for 13 or 17 years. The tower without a hole is the one that a cicada will come out. The one with a hold is the one a cicada has already left. You will be surprised that the hold has a perfect cylindrical shape. How can they make it? I saw a cicada on a trunk of a tree. I feel released when I know that a cicada looks like the one I know from my country. #

There are so many epiphytes in tropical rain forests. A big tree is a house for many epiphytes. One of epiphytes in the rainforest is Bromelia sp.. whose leaves are just like pineapple. It belongs to Pineapple family, Bromeliaceae. Most of Bromeliads are native to neotropic. Most Bromeliads are epiphytic. It is very difficult to identify them in the lowland rainforest as they live on a branch of a tall tree!! The photos were taken at the cloud forest. You can easily look down and find Bromeliads. Bromeliads hold a tank inside the leaves. It is the water source for many species such as frogs and insects, etc. Bromelia also serves as a nest for some birds. There is a study which finds that Bromeliads are the host for some 250 animal species!! Depending on a host tree, epiphytic Bromeliads are depended by lots of lives in the tropical rain forest!! #

At CICRA, rose apple trees bore a thousand of fruits! It smelt rose while passing by the tree. I was going to take one, then a bee in a dimple of the fruit came out and surprised me! Rose Apple, Syzygium malaccense, is native to Malaysia, Indonesia and Southern Vietnum and has spread in tropics in the world. The texture of the fruit was not so crispy as apple when I ate it! It may have been too early to eat? And it tasted really like rose. It was a bit strange to bite it as rose taste spread in my mouth. Fruits are also used for salad and Jam. However, no one at CICRA even tried to eat Rose Apples. They have never been on the table during my stay. The flower of rose apple is supposed to be beautiful. Is this tree only for ornamental purpose? Or, do they just like eating only local fruits? #

Cut stems of Ajo Sacha, Mansoa alliacea, smell like real garlic! Ajo Sacha is a medicinal plant widely used in the greater Amazonia. There must be many usages of the plant, yet its bark is often used for asthma and arthritis. Another common usage is bathing with the plant to treat or protect against fever, influenza, aches and pains, nervousness, fatigue and cramps, as well as evil spirits! It was not the time of blooming, so I missed to see its flowers with the lavender color. In Japan, you can get Ajo Sacha as an ornamental plant. Unless you crush the leaves, it says that it does not smell garlic at all!! #
