Sanipanga, Picramnia Lineata, which I saw in Shaman’s herbal garden, is an important purple dye around this region, and used for coloring face, clothes, etc. Just rubbing leafs of Sanipanga by hands colors my palm! Around this area, many other Picramnia speices are called Sanipanga as well. Although I am not sure it is also called Sanipanga, Picramnia bullata is endemic to Peru and was registered in the red list of threatened species in 2006. Jorge, the assistant to Shaman, showed me three other natural dyes. Huito (Genipa Americana) is used for gray color, Wild Ginger (the scientific name was not confirmed) for yellow, and Achote (Bixa orellana) for red. Huito’s gray may remain on skin for a month, sometimes. It did remain until the next day. The purple color of Sanipanga on my palm could not be easily washed away by soap. The liquid from Sanipanga leaves also helps to heal wounds, and is especially good for mosquito bites! I should have rubbed the leaves on my arms!! #

FENAMAD (Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and tributaries)によって設立された。 After one month stay in the Jungle as a volunteer, I visited the “Centro Nape” where a shaman makes medicines from plants in the jungle and treats local people. The Centro Nape is located in the community called Infierno, which spreads in 10,000 ha Jungle along Tambopata river. The Centro Nape was established in 1998 by FENAMAD (Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and tributaries), in order to support lives of native people in this area by providing accessible natural medicines. At the Centro Nape, there are 8 herbal gardens with lodging and dining facilities. The lodging is for the patients who come here for shaman’s treatment. Unfortunately, the shaman was away while I visited. Jorge, the assistant, took me around and explained medicinal plants and their preparation for the treatment. I also had an opportunity to taste some of natural medicines prepared by the shaman. Due to the limited time, I was not able to see all the gardens. Yet, it was so impressive just to be in the place where a shaman selects plants from the jungle, makes natural medicines and treats patients with them. A boat called Peke Peke by local people came to pick me up. Children in the community took off their clothes, ran into Peke Peke, and jumped off into the river! Under the strong sun light, I headed to my lodge leaving the boys in the water. #

その名は、Velo de Novia(ベロ デ ノビア)。 英語で、Bamboo Fungus(バンブー・フォンガス/竹キノコとでも訳すかな)、中国では、ジュウスゥン(竹の孫の意)と呼ばれるだけある。 Finally, I was able to take a picture of Velo de Novia! Velo de Novia, meaning Bride’s veil in Spanish, holds its beautiful veil only for a few hours. It is very difficult to encounter the beautiful ones! Velo de Novia, Phallus indusiatus, is a tropical fungus, yet appears in other areas, such as Japan and Australia. As it is called Bamboo Fungus in English, it often grows in the bamboo forest and appears after the heavy rain. In the jungle, it is seen more frequently, but usually after the peak of its beauty. In Chinese and French, it is a precious ingredient used for soup and other dish. I must try one! #

I suddenly left to Amazon again last December. For a month, I stayed at CICRA (Centro de Investigación y Capacitación Rio Los Amigos), a field station of the local organization ACCA (Asociación para la Conservación de la Cuenca Amazónica), which conducts various projects for protecting biodiversity in Amazon. My task as a volunteer at CICRA was to maintain the Medicinal Herb Garden and update the information of the garden. For the rest of time, I just kept walking in the jungle holding a machete in my right hand. I got used to walk in the jungle trails by myself! As expected, I experienced the rainy season. The rain was heavy as if the sky would fall down! It was even scary! I resume writing on plants, mammals and people, etc. whom I encountered in Amazon! #
